Introduction

The Department of Toxicology, Dermato-Cosmetology and Pharmacognosy (FAFY) is part of the Faculty "Medicine and Pharmacy" of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB).
The group is headed by Prof. Vera Rogiers. Under her promotership two major research areas were developed:

  • Toxicological research: focusing on in vitro experimental toxicology.
  • Dermato-cosmetic research: concerned with the different aspects of efficacy and safety measurements of cosmetics and dermatological products and their formulation.

The FAFY team is active in several National and European Associations related to the scientific research topics and know-how of the group. Vera Rogiers is, at the European level, co-chair of the SCCP (Scientific Committee on Consumer Products), member of the mirror group of epaa (The European Partnership for Alternative Approaches to Animal Testing), member of ESAC (ECVAM Scientific Advisory Committee) and coordinator and research partner in several EU projects of FP6 and FP7. Furthermore, she is founder and has been chair of ecopa, the European Consensus Platform for Alternative Methods, until end 2009.

On a regular basis, the department organizes scientific congresses, workshops, symposia at both the National and International level. Every year, two Dermato-Cosmetic courses are being organized, which have achieved international recognition and which stand for quality and professional knowledge.

Furthermore, the department is a fertile soil for doctoral and postdoctoral research. Indeed, over the last decade, a high number of master theses and doctoral theses have been successfully defended.
