Persons with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection have ongoing requirements for multi-drug therapies, including prescription, over-the-counter, alternative and investigational products. These patients are at higher risk for adverse drug reactions. The pharmacist is critical in ensuring proper medication usage and detecting and managing adverse and potential drug interactions. This site was made to help the pharmacist in the delivery of antiretroviral agents to the HIV patient and in the future it can be expanded to all medication needed by the HIV patient.
This site will be accessible at any time all around the world and should be regularly updated. The site contains, in addition of the information about the antiretroviral druginteractions, an introduction to HIV, an introduction to cytochrome P45O (which is responsible fot many drug interactions) and information on the treatment of HIV. The site also gives a list of interesting sites related to with HIV and its treatment.
The site is part of a thesis made to obtain the legal degree of pharmasist at the "Vrije Universiteit Brussel" (VUB-Free University of Brussels). It was made under the guidance of Prof. Dr. H. De Clercq, head of the pharmacy of the hospital AZ-VUB in Brussels, and F. Questier, pharmacist and Ph.D. candidate of the department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis (FABI). The technical support was given by the department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis (FABI), which is under the direction of Prof. Dr. D.L. Massart.
The information on which the interaction table is based is provided by Chantal Holvoet, also part of a thesis to obtain the legal degree of pharmasist at the VUB on interactions of antiretroviral and other drugs used by HIV patients (Promotors Prof. Dr. H. De Clercq and E. Hollanders, pharmacist.
